TUTORIAL : OUTLINE HEADER

flybutterfly24 wondered how I achieved the outline effect in my header so I present to you my first tutorial! :D

First off, start with a new document. I usually do headers to the size of 700px x 300px, but whatever's good for you works.

So, now you have the blank document it's time to start graphicsing! Drag the first image you want to work with onto the stage.

Once you've got the image you want to work with into a layer, start erasing the area around what you want to keep. Here we've got the lovely John and Rodney to work with.

Zoom in to see details. You don't have to be too exact, but a close crop will work to create a better effect. Finish erasing around the whole image and zoom back out once more.

Now you've got the cleaned up image it's time to do some magic. Right click (or apple click) on the layer with the image on and choose Blending Options.

Go to STROKE on the left hand side. Change the colour to white and the size to 5-10, depending on how you want the outline to look. A thin thickness usually works better the more images you have and a large thickness tends to suit larger images as oppose to smaller ones.

Then go to DROP SHADOW. Uncheck Use Global Light. Change the distance to 0 and the size to somewhere around 30. Use the preview function on the right hand side to see how your image looks and judge what looks best.

Hey boys! We now have a delightful border and shadow around our two lovelies.

Shrink, rotate and clean up the image however you see fit. Here I've made the boys smaller and raised the brightness and contrast. Already we've got a pretty nice image to work with.

Repeat this step until you've got as many "sticker" type images as you want. You can add gradients, text and textures ontop to add to the effect. And viola! You've just made your first outline header.
